Breast Surgeries

Breast surgery can be done with two options: a woman can undergo breast reconstruction surgery with implants or use her own tissue. The doctor can create new breast tissue using the woman's fat and lower abdominal wall segments. A woman can also have a nipple-sparing or skin-sparing mastectomy. Both methods can cause scarring. Breast surgeries may not be for everyone.

Breast reduction surgery

Most breast-reduction surgeries can be done as an outpatient procedure. Although there may be some swelling or discoloration following the procedure, it will usually disappear within a few days. In a few days, the stitches and bandages can be removed and the patient shouldn't resume strenuous activities within one month. A breast reduction will cause some discomfort during the initial recovery period, but the breasts will gradually soften and look natural again. Six months to one year will pass before you can see the results.

Following the surgery, the surgeon will place an incision in the skin along the natural crease of the breasts. These incisions will allow for the removal of excess skin and fat. Some women may also have their areolae raised. The surgeon will close the incision using either internal or external dissolvable sutures. The surgical recovery period may require an overnight stay. Afterwards, the patient will be released from the hospital. It may take up to five hours for the entire operation to be completed.

Nipple-sparing Mastectomies

A Nipple-sparing mastectomy is an alternative to radiation treatment for breast cancer. This procedure preserves a patient's breasts and avoids radiation treatment. Although not every woman who undergoes this surgery will opt to sidestep radiation, approximately 30% of new cases may not undergo radiation treatment after undergoing a full mastectomy. This surgery is an option for women who have large or small breasts.

This type of surgery, though not easily accessible, is very effective. This procedure preserves the entire skin envelope, including the nipple. Usually, breast reconstructions are performed within minutes of a NSM. Although it is still not widely used for mastectomy, it has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional breast cancer treatments. Its many benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

A skin-saving mastectomy

A skin-sparing mastectomy refers to a surgery in which all of breast skin is preserved, with the exception of the nipple, areola and nipple. This allows the surgeon reconstruct the breasts without scarring. To replace the volume, the surgeon may use a flap or an implant. There are two types of skin-sparing mastectomy: a TRAM flap or a Latissimus flap. Both uses the tissues and muscle of the body to reconstruct the breast.

Skin-sparing mastectomy has many advantages, including the preservation and protection of the native skin envelope and inframammary fold. The cosmetic results of a breast reconstruction are improved by the preservation of the native skin and inframammaryfold. It can also reduce the need for contralateral simetrizing surgery. However, skin-sparing matectomies can pose a few risks.

Modified radical mastectomy

Modified radical mastectomy is a good option if you are worried about the risks associated with a mastectomy. Modified radical mastectomy does not remove the entire breast. This type also preserves breast tissue. These procedures are not performed by all surgeons. You should speak with your doctor before making a decision about which type of surgery you want.

Although many hospitals now offer traditional modified radical breastectomy, this method is not widely utilized. Traditional modified radical mastectomy techniques place emphasis on the protection of the anterior thoracic and intercostobrachial nerves. These nerves are to be preserved for sensory functions only. These techniques are comparable to the ones used by Halsted, Meyer, and Patey. Moore61 in 1867 described one such method.
